Dive into the history of Communism in Bucharest on a guided tour including admission to the Museum of Communism!
You will meet your English-speaking local guide at Restaurant Stadio Unirii, located on Unirii Boulevard in the heart of Bucharest. In a small group, you will begin a walking tour dedicated to the recent history of the Romanian capital, deeply shaped by the Communist era.
Accompanied by your guide, you will discover the main landmarks connected to this period. You will notably stop in front of the Palace of Parliament, a major symbol of the large-scale construction policy led under Nicolae Ceausescu. You will also see several churches that were relocated to make way for the regime’s new urban planning projects. Your guide will explain the international context that led to the establishment of communism in Romania, as well as its development until the 1989 Revolution.
You will then head to Revolution Square, a key site in Romanian history, where Nicolae Ceausescu delivered his final public speech before the fall of the regime. At each stop, you will learn more about communist ideology, as well as about daily life under the regime: food shortages, political control, and the organization of social life.
The tour will continue at the Museum of Communism, where you will benefit from skip-the-line entry. You will explore interactive exhibitions that will help you better understand this period through historical objects and reconstructions. You will enjoy a typical communist-era snack along with a cup of “nechezol,” a coffee substitute commonly consumed during the 1980s rationing period. Drinks and snacks will be served in vintage communist tableware for a fully immersive experience.
At the end of this approximately three-hour experience, you will finish your visit near the museum, enriched with a deeper understanding of Bucharest’s contemporary history.
